The fourth trimester is a term usually used to describe the kind of incubator-like period of time following the birth of a baby. As a pregnancy takes three trimesters for the baby to gestate, there are a few months following birth where mom and baby are adjusting to life outside the womb. It also is usually the time when baby is eating a lot, sleeping very little and Mom spends most days in a bathrobe.
This blog started because a good friend of mine had her son two years ago, and midway during her pregnancy told me I need to: a. get pregnant, stat and b. write about it.
Although I did not know what I would have to say about pregnancy that hasn’t already been put out there, I have felt the void as a new mom for discussion about what happens to women after they give birth; something that goes beyond the articles on waiting six weeks to resume sexual activity and how to spot the signs for post-partum depression.
I’m talking about all those unspoken things that happen to a new mom … hemorrhoids and sleeplessness, mom clothes and sex drives. Losing weight and trying to have conversations with our girlfriends that don’t involve nipples, spitting up or the excitement of solid baby poop.
Because despite the fact that I love being a mom, as many moms do, there are plenty of times when I wonder, Where did the woman in me go? And then, How do I get her back?
Hopefully as I transition from being a mom-to-be to a mom, I can continue to look for the woman I was, and bring a few readers with me. 😉
